Here is a beautiful example of a Sheaffer Balance in Jet Black. This pen is from aroun 1935, give or take a year, based on the design of the clip. The size of the pen is the same as a Statesman/1000 with dimensions of 53/8” long, and a barrel diameter of 15/32“. The hardware on this pen is very clean, with no brassing or corrosion. The barrel and cap are in excellent condition, no gouges or deep scratches. The only thing barely visible are surface scratches from light use.
The ink window is very clear and easy to see through with only slight ambering. As you can see in the picture above, it’s very easy to see the plunger filling mechanism. This pen holds a good amount of ink which is due to the excellent vacuum created by the plunger. The plunger filler doesn’t have a very good reputation but this one is solid and will last a long time.
Now, what I think is the best part of this pen: the nib. It is an incredibly smooth XF. Usually there is some “tooth” associated with XF nibs, but this one is silky smooth. The nib is neither wet nor dry, but right in the middle. It’s wet enough to glide across the paper but dry enough that it doesn’t take too long for the ink to dry. $95 SOLD
